Drydocks World establishes credentials in conversion sector with groundbreaking box-to-livestock carrier order

Dubai, Thursday 13 May 2010 – Drydocks World has entered the livestock-carrier conversion sector with a $60 million groundbreaking order from Saudi Arabian company Hmood Al Ali Al Khalaf Trading and Transportation Est. The contract is to convert a 2,300 TEU container ship into a livestock carrier in line with state-of-the-art technical specifications. 
Utilising 5,500 tonnes of steel and incorporating specially pre-fabricated pens with total area of about 25,000sqm, the Awassi Express will be equipped to safely, comfortably and humanely transport livestock in conditions far exceeding the minimum safety and animal welfare requirements stipulated by AMSA Australia and other World Maritime Safety Authorities. The livestock carrier is designed by Denmark-based firm Corral Line, and to be converted at Drydocks World’s Pertama yard in Batam, Indonesia. 
“We are delighted with all our growing achievements in Batam,” said Denis Welch, Chief Executive Officer of Drydocks World – Southeast Asia, “but none more so than this conversion.”  The contract was signed recently and the Awassi Express is due for delivery in the last quarter of the year.

Shri M Vijayakumar, Hon’ble Minister for Law, Sports, Youth Affairs, Parliamentary Affairs and Ports, Government of Kerala, laid the foundation stone for setting up of a Bollard Pull Test Facility for Cochin Shipyard Ltd. at Vizhinjam, today.  Shri S Sharma, Hon’ble Minister for Fisheries, Govt of Kerala, presided over the function. Shri George Mercier, Hon’ble MLA, Kovalam was the Chief Guest. Cmde M Jitendran, CMD, Cochin Shipyard Limited delivered the welcome address. Cmde K Subramaniam, Director (Operations) proposed the vote of thanks. Other senior officials from CSL were also present.

The test facility is required to check and confirm pulling capacity of ships including tugs and Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels upto 500 tonnes.  Presently facility of such high capacity is not available anywhere in India.  This facility will be used for ships under construction in Cochin Shipyard.  The facility can also cater to requirement of Indian Coast Guard, Indian Navy and also Kerala Ports Department.  The test facility is being set up in an eco-environmental friendly way.

A Memorandum of Agreement has also been signed on 03rd May 2010 between Kerala Port Department and Cochin Shipyard Limited in connection with the project. The agreement signed by Dr. Jacob Thomas, IPS, Director (Kerala Port Department) and Mr. P Aboobacker, Executive Director (Shiprepair), CSL was exchanged during the function.  Shri V Radhakrishnan, Director (Technical) handed over the cheque for the ground rent to Dr Jacob Thomas, IPS, Director (Kerala Port Department).
 

MARINE EXHAUST SYSTEMS WINS PATENT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT AGAINST DEANGELO MARINE EXHAUST

On April 21, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida found that DeAngelo Marine Exhaust willfully infringed on two of Marine Exhaust Systems, Inc.'s US patents and that these patents are valid and enforceable.  The court also awarded Marine Exhaust $92,804 USD in damages and agreed to consider additional losses, as well as possibly tripling the final amount.  
"We're very pleased with the court's decision," said Marine Exhaust VP Sheila Prieschl.  "This is a vindication of inventor Woodrow Woods' hard work and innovation, as well as our intellectual property rights.  We will continue to bring pioneering solutions to the design, production and service of marine diesel exhaust components."
DeAngelo Marine Exhaust infringed on Marine Exhaust's US Patents 5,740,670 and 6,035,633 for water-jacketed exhaust pipes for marine exhaust systems.  Woodrow Woods advanced the art and science of marine exhaust systems by inventing and perfecting an exhaust component that addressed the overheating and water migration problems plaguing the marine industry.

EIMA and GlobalMET Conduct Middle East’s First Review of IMO STCW Convention

Under the patronage of the UAE National Transport Authority, and supported by Dubai Maritime City Authority, Emirates International Maritime Academy (EIMA) announced that it hosted the region’s first seminar in Dubai focusing on the development and delivery of effective maritime education and training, including the implications of the revised IMO International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) Convention.
 “GlobalMET”,the well-known maritime organization and a growing network of 100 member institutions in 34 countries, joined EIMA in organizing this event.“We are committed to providing the UAE, GCC, and the Middle East as a whole with industry leading maritime education on both theoretical and practical levels,” said Jaafar bin Sidin, Director of EIMA. “EIMA is proud to be hosting this inaugural seminar together with GlobalMET. It will help create a platform that encourages development and delivery of effective maritime education and training in view of the revised STCW Convention scheduled at the end of 2012,” he added.
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), established by the IMO first in 1978, sets qualification standards for masters, officers and watch personnel on seagoing merchant ships. STCW was adopted in 1978 by conference at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, and entered into force in 1984. The Convention was significantly amended in 1995. And the year 2012 will see more and new changes added to the convention. With support from Dubai’s leading maritime players – DP World and Drydocks World – the maritime expert speakers at the event addressed and discussed the new changes expected for the STCW convention and their impact on the maritime industry, with focus on ship owners, ship managers, seafarers, and regulators in the UAE, GCC, and the Middle East region. Participants at the well attended seminar included leading maritime experts from world renowned organizations including: GlobalMET, The National Transport Authority Maritime Administration of UAE,  Global Met, IFSMA, Anglo Eastern Maritime Training Centre, ADNATCO-NGSCO, Marine Business Development, Karishma Marine Solutions, and Austral Asian Maritime Education Services Ltd.
