West Triton poised to plug Montara

Off Shore Logistics

The jack-up rig West Triton has arrived at the Montara wellhead platform, in the Timor Sea, where it is preparing to drill a relief well to plug a leak from a blowout at the development site.

Thai player PTTEP said that drilling of the relief well is expected to start within 72 hours.

The relief well is intended to intersect the existing well from the wellhead platform and the West Atlas rig. This will allow for the injection of heavy mud directly into the existing well bore to stem the leak.

The outfit said it takes a safety first approach in all its operations and all crew aboard the West Triton are undertaking safety measures and training before drilling starts.

The rig’s legs were pinned down into position this morning, fixing the West Triton to the seabed two kilometres south-south-west from the Montara wellhead platform.

Meanwhile, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is continuing to tackle the slick from the blowout, which occurred on 21 August.
